What is Auro-3D?
Auro-3D is an audio format that offers immersive channel-based sound reproduction, rather than object-based sound like Dolby Atmos.
Created by Wilfred Van Balen in 2005, the mission was to create an immersive sound experience for both home cinema and studio mixing.
It works using 2 to 3 speaker levels to create an immersive sound bubble comparable to other formats like Dolby Atmos and DTS: X.
Utilizing 5.1 and 7.1 sound formats, Auro-3D introduces height channels that reveal both localized sounds and height reflections complementing the sounds that exist in the lower surround layer.
Will I need a special device?
You will need an AVR (or a processor and amplifier combo) that decodes and supports Auro-3D.
Most of the popular manufacturers now support this format.
Here is a list of suggested manufacturers:
- Denon
- Marantz
- Trinnov
- Arcam
- McIntosh
What is the minimum number of speakers I will need to fully appreciate Auro-3D?
The short answer is 9 plus your subwoofer creating a 9.1 setup.
First, you will need your foundation (otherwise known as ‘bed layer’) speakers.
- Front Left and Right
- Center
- Surrounds Left and Right
You will also need suitable height speakers (not in-ceiling), 4 in total.
It is possible to use just two front-height speakers but you will notice a gap in the sound space behind you. Another option would be to incorporate a VOG = Voice of God channel which is a downward-firing, ceiling-mounted speaker positioned directly above the main listening position but this is not essential in creating the "sound bubble".
What is the Ideal speaker placement?
We recommend following their guidelines which can be found through this link: Auro-3D guidelines.
Every room has its limitations, so we recommend following them to your best abilities, with your room's constraints in mind.
Auro-3D, Dolby Atmos, or DTS:X?
The answer is as always; it depends. We generally recommend sticking to the Dolby Atmos guidelines, as this is the most commonly adopted surround format, with DTS:X in second place. The benefit of Auro-3D is the addition of the Voice of God that some people swear by, but the other surround formats are more flexible and offer better precision.
All you need to get started
In conclusion, we have covered the basics of Auro-3D, a surround sound format that adds an additional height dimension to traditional surround sound. We discussed the benefits of Auro-3D, such as increased immersion and a more realistic soundstage, as well as the equipment required to experience it. We walked through examples of how to set up and configure Auro-3D in your home theater. We hope that this tutorial has provided a clear understanding of how Auro-3D works and how it can enhance your home theater experience. Remember, Auro-3D can greatly enhance your listening experience, but it can still fall short compared to other more modern surround formats.
