Upsampling increases the sample rate of a digital audio signal. For example, from 44.1kHz to 96kHz. It doesn’t add new detail; it mathematically inserts extra data points between the original ones. Think of it like upscaling an image.
Does It Improve Sound?
Typically no. It doesn't add anything to the original audio file. It won't restore lost detail not in the original recording, and won't turn low-resolution audio files into high-res. In some cases, upsampling can add digital artifacts to the playback.
Should You Use It?
We always encourage trying it for yourself, but in most systems, upsampling will not make a noticeable difference. If your DAC or streamer requires certain sample rates, upsampling can help. Just keep in mind it cannot turn a low-quality source into a high-quality one.
