Can you get the boom without a subwoofer?
A true full-range speaker is a speaker that can produce the entire audio spectrum (20Hz-20kHz) - everything in the movie or music soundtrack can be reproduced accurately without the need for other speakers. That bass in your favorite movie can be handled by the speaker, without the need for a subwoofer. The drivers on a full-range speaker also handle the mid and high frequencies well, reproducing a wide range of frequencies. A full-range speaker aims to provide a more balanced sound across all frequencies - and makes calibrating your system that much quicker!
Be mindful when looking for new speakers - you might have read that a speaker is "full-range" but make sure you demo for yourself. Hear them if you can, read the specs, and make sure you're getting what you want - you don't want to unpack your new babies, and feel that something is "missing." It can be quite fun to just crank a tower and get all the bass you want, but it's not easily found.
True full-range speakers are hard to come by - finding a speaker that can produce incredible mids and highs and deliver an awesome low end is a journey that can prove quite frustrating. Take your time and enjoy the process, happy hunting!
