What is Speaker Break-In?
The break-in period is a commonly misunderstood but important phase in a speaker’s performance lifecycle. It refers to the time it takes for the individual drivers—especially the suspension components like the surround and spider—to loosen from their factory-stiff state.
As the drivers become more flexible through regular use, they begin to perform closer to their intended specifications. This allows the speaker to deliver a more accurate and dynamic sound, ultimately enhancing the overall listening experience.
Benefits of the Break-In Period:
- Improved Bass Response
The woofer’s suspension loosens, allowing for deeper, fuller bass with better extension and control. - Enhanced Dynamic Range
With greater mechanical freedom, the drivers respond more effortlessly to changes in volume and transients, making music sound more lively and natural.
While not all speakers change drastically during break-in, many benefit from 20–50 hours of regular playback at moderate volumes. This process helps ensure the speakers are performing as intended by the manufacturer.
Allowing for this natural break-in phase can make a noticeable difference, particularly in the consistency and refinement of the sound over time.
Break-In Procedure
We don't specify a break-in procedure. It really makes no difference how you move the drivers, they just have to move. All the components in the drivers, may it be the rubber surround or the spider/suspension, will get more compliant over time until they reach their full specifications.
Just have fun playing your favorite music and movies and enjoy the sound getting better.
After around 50 hours you will hear the full potential of your speakers.
